Araucaria bidwillii - Bunya Pine
Araucaria bidwillii (Bunya Pine)
The Bunya Pine is a majestic and long-lived Australian conifer native to the subtropical rainforests of south-east Queensland. Renowned for its distinctive symmetrical form, strong architectural presence and massive edible seed cones, it is one of Australia's most iconic trees.
Growing into a large evergreen specimen, the Bunya Pine develops a straight trunk and dense, dome-shaped crown with glossy dark green foliage. Mature trees produce large cones containing nutritious seeds ("bunya nuts"), which were traditionally harvested and celebrated by Aboriginal peoples for thousands of years. some notable examples of this tree can be found in Cowaramup town centre!
Best suited to parks, large rural properties and expansive landscapes, Bunya Pines are hardy, drought tolerant once established and adaptable to a range of well-drained soils. Their striking silhouette and remarkable longevity make them an outstanding feature tree for future generations.
