Beaufortia sparsa (Swamp Bottlebrush / Swamp Flameflower)
Beaufortia sparsa (Swamp Bottlebrush / Swamp Flameflower)
Beaufortia sparsa, commonly known as Swamp Bottlebrush or Swamp Flameflower, is an upright to spreading shrub endemic to south-west Western Australia. It is prized for its fine, textured foliage and striking orange to orange-red brush-like flowers that are spaced along the stems, giving a vibrant, fiery display through spring and into summer.
Unlike plants with dense terminal blooms, this species carries its flowers along the branches, creating a more open, luminous effect. The floral display attracts nectar-feeding birds and insects, bringing movement and life to the garden.
Swamp Flameflower adapts well to well-drained garden soils and will tolerate dry conditions once established. Its naturally airy habit allows it to sit comfortably with other plants without dominating them, making it an excellent choice as a standalone feature or as part of mixed borders and native-inspired landscapes. It responds well to pruning after flowering, which helps maintain shape and encourages renewed growth without detracting from its signature form.
